If it's not already true, then business web sites are fast becoming the largest shop window in the world. And what's great about the good ones is that reflect corporate values, provide ready information and, frequently, poortunities for direct reader involvement.

But the proportion of really good ones isn't as high as it might be.

How many times must one wait before sitting through what may even have been a delicious 'Flash' movie, when all one wanted was to check an address? Why should it take so long to uncover what should have been an immediately obvious and instantly available link?

Design.

And good design isn't just so much eye-candy. It is critical that a web site is well structured. Sure - it's great if it's nice to look at but to what use if the user has lost the will to continue because the graphics take an age to load or they mean nothing. There again, who wants to spend time looking at reams of close typed excellence - that's what books are for. It's an immediate medium and lots of the best sites change and evelove on an ongoing basis.

We created this site for ourselves.

Make no mistake, we know it has faults - and we blame every one of them on ourselves. We failed to encourage the client to be objective enough and to be ruthless about the copy. It's more like War and Peace than a web site. And it'll change a lot in time.

But at least we designed its main menu so it wouldn't be such an overwhelming amount on offer and so that it's easy to get around.

Whether you want a shopping cart solution (Amazon.com), a query system (Railtrack.com) or a searchable directory (BT.com), a web-enabled database will be your answer. Now, we're not pretending for a moment that these excellent examples on the grandest scale were done by us, (wish that they were).
